Life
Life begins when matter draws a boundary around itself and becomes a pattern capable of enduring.
The proposition
Life is matter that has learned to keep a difference in play.
A living thing is not first a substance. It is a continuing achievement: a boundary held against dispersal, an organisation repeatedly remade and a history carried forward in usable form.
The boundary does more than separate. It creates an inside from which some differences become urgent. Energy, damage and opportunity are compressed into signals that can guide action. Once a system acts on those differences in ways that help it continue, the first architecture of agency is already present.

Matter encloses a process and produces a consequential distinction between what belongs to the system and what does not.
Some differences begin to matter
The world is reduced to the gradients, encounters and changes that bear upon continuation.
The pattern remakes itself
Metabolism, repair and reproduction carry an organisation through time even as its material continually changes.
What follows
From survival to open-ended becoming
Every later territory begins here. Minds elaborate the distinctions life already makes; meaning deepens their consequences; language lets them travel; identity stabilises a changing history; civilisation preserves corrections beyond a body. The long trajectory of life is not mere endurance, but increasing freedom over the forms in which endurance becomes possible.
The first meaning is not a word. It is a difference that changes whether a system continues.
